2 Channels + Function Generator and Premium Finish!
The nice people at Miniware ere nice enough to send the DS212 mini oscilloscope for review.
I had previously reviewd small oscilloscopes, speacially from FNIRSI, like the FNIRSI DSO-150 – $20 Digital Oscilloscope, the FNIRSI DSO PRO – Complete Review & Teardown, but this DS212 mini oscilloscope from Miniware is on another league.
Everything from the box, to the way the product is packed inside the finish, everything “smells” like premium. It was a nice experience to unpack everything and setup the oscilloscope for operation.
The probes are good enough and due to the size of the oscilloscope they use a smaller MCX adapter to connect the probes to the two available channels. A third MCX is also available for the function generator output.
So, in such a small device we have 2 channels and function generator and that is fantastic.
The oscillocope itself is controlled but 2 rotary “buttons” or knobs, that will allow you to select between the several menu options you have.
The menu system is mainly composed of 3 pages, where you can navigate trought the available options. The first page is dedicated to the normal oscilloscope functions like changing the time range, the amplitude, cursors or setting the trigger.
On the second menu page we have the measures menu, where you can set with values will appear on the screen with measured values. We have those values always on in the bottom of the screen.
Finally on the third menu page we have the system functions, like access to saved signals/images, setting the waveform output on the function generator, calibration and some more additional info.
The size of the device and image quality is a great selling point of this device. It is also accurate and fairly complete for a very small oscilloscope, don’t forget that it came with 2 channels and function generator.
That said, the point for me not so positive is the 1Mhz bandwidth and 10MSa/s sample rate. For this price range we can find some solutions that are also portable and can go up to 100Mhz or more, with two channels and I’m not sure it has also function generator.
In this case that is not really the point, we have here a complete set with a premium finish, the aluminum frame and case are awesome. The overall quality is very high. Another strong point, in my opinion is that the source code for the oscilloscope is available for download and if you want you can customize you own version.
I should say that this oscilloscope is more than enough if you’re working with arduinos/esp or similiar projects.
